Jackson Johnson

Jackson Johnson’s journey to Briar Cliff University is one marked by a commitment to community, growth, and ambition. A sophomore majoring in K-12 Physical Education, Jackson balances his time between football, campus activities, and volunteer firefighting. A Sioux City native, he found Briar Cliff offered the perfect blend of proximity, athletics, and meaningful scholarships to support his education. However, what drew him in was the genuine warmth he felt when he visited: “It was like the people giving me tours actually wanted me to come,” he shared, reflecting on the sincerity of Briar Cliff’s campus community.

Jackson’s high school experience at the Sioux City Career Academy helped shape his path. Originally exploring firefighting classes, he was drawn to public service early on, yet his interests expanded when he tried the Career Academy’s education program. This experience led him to realize his passion for teaching. Briar Cliff’s connections to the Career Academy helped Jackson transition into college as an academic sophomore, already having a clear career path.

Balancing academics and athletics have been no small feat. Thankfully, he’s found a solid support system in his roommates and teammates, whom he describes as brothers and lifelong friends. The shared schedules and shared determination have helped him succeed on and off the field. For Jackson, these bonds are invaluable.

Alongside his studies and athletics, Jackson is a volunteer firefighter at the Sergeant Bluff Fire Station. This role not only reinforces his sense of duty but also brings him full circle to his initial interests at the Career Academy, allowing him to contribute actively to the community he calls home.

Reflecting on the support he’s received at Briar Cliff, Jackson praises key figures like Alicia Harper and Theresa Engel, who have provided him with guidance and encouragement. He also emphasizes the importance of connecting with people on campus.

When asked what his advice would be to new students, he said, “I would say, just go out and talk to people. It's pretty easy to just be quiet and mind your own business. But the people I've met here are amazing. I wouldn’t have even known so many of my friends if I didn't go out and talk.”

His journey at Briar Cliff University is just beginning, yet he’s already leaving a positive mark on the campus and beyond.
