Siouxland's First Collegiate-Run Mariachi Academy and Band, Las Cimas, to Debut This Fall

September 18, 2024

Siouxland's music scene is about to get a vibrant addition with the formation of Mariachi Las Cimas, one of the state's first mariachi academies sponsored by a private college. With approximately 15 inaugural members comprising young students from Siouxland, Mariachi Las Cimas is set to bring traditional mariachi music to audiences across the region.

Under the guidance of Dr. Brian Cook, assistant professor of music at Briar Cliff, and Miguel Grima, a seasoned mariachi professional, Mariachi Las Cimas will inspire a rising generation of Mariachi performers and captivate audiences with their passion and dedication to this musical tradition. Though many members are novices at playing their instruments, their commitment to learning is bound to shine through in their performances and outreach.

The formation of Las Cimas was made possible through a generous $10,000 Gilchrest Grant and an $8,000 grant from Unity in Action, which provided the necessary resources for instruments. This marks a significant milestone for Siouxland's music community as it introduces a unique cultural experience that celebrates the rich heritage of mariachi music.

"We are excited to introduce Mariachi Las Cimas to the Siouxland community," said Brian Cook, the band's founder. "This endeavor provides students with an opportunity to explore and appreciate mariachi music, and also allows us to contribute to the diverse cultural landscape of Sioux City."

Mariachi Las Cimas plans to make their debut performances this fall, including playing at Celebrando Siouxland in South Sioux City on September 20th and 22nd. Audiences can expect a blend of traditional mariachi tunes and contemporary twists, showcasing the talent and dedication of these budding musicians.
