BCU Students at IPEC Day

Briar Cliff University Healthcare Students Participate in 2nd annual IPEC

March 3, 2023

Briar Cliff University and Western Iowa Tech Community College alongside several other institutions participated in the 2nd annual Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) day held at WITCC. The event hosted over 90 students across various healthcare programs such as nursing, physical therapy, pharmacy, social work, and healthcare administration. Students were placed into small groups and work together on a case study.

“Health outcomes are better when care providers work together as a team and don’t practice in silos, “ said Soren Grieve, Department Chair and Assistant Professor of Health Sciences at Briar Cliff University. “Events like IPEC day help health professions students understand the importance of team-based care works.”

Modern Healthcare requires various groups of professionals with different educational backgrounds, ideas, and responsibilities to work together to deliver and coordinate services. Healthcare continues to grow in complexity, meaning no single profession can address all patient’s needs.

IPEC day is designed for students to experience interprofessional collaborative care on a mock patient. The training allows students to gain an understanding of the roles of other medical providers and how their discipline works in the healthcare team. Briar Cliff strives to prepare students with the experience necessary to excel in the workforce.
