TRIO Talent Search Mentor

SUMMARY:

The TRIO Talent Search Mentor is a full-time, temporary employee who is responsible to the Director of TRIO Talent Search.  Responsible for presenting the TRIO Talent Search Program’s goals and activities to participants during the summer.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Conduct summer group activities, meetings, and workshops for middle and high school students.
• Assist students individually with college preparation, including college applications, scholarship applications, ACT registration, study skills, time management, and other skills necessary for academic success
• Consults with TS advisors on a regular basis
• Maintains accurate records concerning program services
• Other duties as assigned by the TS Director

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

• A bachelor’s degree in education, social work, or related field preferred
• One or more years of experience working with educationally and economicallydisadvantaged youth.  

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Sensitivity to educationally and economically disadvantaged youth.  
• Ability to utilize computer and various programs.  Familiarity with service area and target schools.  
• Ability to establish rapport with participants.  
• Teaching skills to assist participants in educational growth and development.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to write business correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of customers. 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.  

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, or controls; and talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to walk.  The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. 

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While perform the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. 

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
