Department of Nursing Chairperson

SUMMARY:

The Department of Nursing at Briar Cliff University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track nursing department chair position. The University offers CCNE-accredited BSN, MSN for family, adult gerontological primary care, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, and DNP programs. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administration:

• Ensure the mission effectiveness of the Department of Nursing.
• Ensure administration of the Department of Nursing including supervision and evaluation of the nursing faculty.
• Develop, with faculty input, and administer the budgets for the Department of Nursing.
• Recommend to the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) and Academic RankCommittee appointment, reappointment, promotion, and tenure of nursing faculty.
• Develop and carry out a systematic plan for program evaluation and outcome assessment plan.
• Arrange for curriculum consultation as needed.
• Provide for orientation of new faculty in collaboration with the university plan.
• Ensure that faculty rights and responsibilities are upheld.
• Maintain administrative lines of communication within the University which are consistent with other academic departments.
• Coordinate the grant writing efforts of the faculty.
• Facilitate the Nursing Advisory Committee.
• Arrange for contractual agreements with clinical agencies as needed for students to meet program objectives.
• Maintain articulation agreements, cooperative program agreements, and educational partnership agreements.

Provide leadership to the Nursing Faculty Organization to accomplish the following:

• Develop, evaluate, and revise the total nursing curriculum.
• Maintain and enhance library and media materials for nursing.
• Develop and revise student policies in relation to admission, evaluation, progression, and graduation, which are forwarded for final approval to university faculty.
• Ensure that program ethical standards are upheld.
• Appoint subcommittees of the faculty as these become necessary.
• Maintain liaison with interdisciplinary groups designed to ensure community involvement in program planning and evaluation.
• Provide representation for the Department of Nursing as necessary.
• Represent the Department of Nursing to constituents and the public.

Teaching and Advising:

• Maintain open communication with potential students regarding articulation procedures and program requirements.
• Maintain channels of communication designed to provide students an opportunity to contribute to program development, implementation, evaluation.
• Coordinate academic advisement efforts and maintain record of advisees.
• Manage tracking and follow up of academic progression requirements and coordinate academic counseling for at-risk students.
• Carry teaching load congruent with administrative/leadership responsibilities.
• Ensure that student rights and responsibilities are upheld.
• Facilitate mechanisms for faculty, student, and clinical partners teaching and curricular evaluation.
• Collaborate with other academic departments on course and program offering.

 

Professional development for Faculty:

• Assist faculty to enhance knowledge and competency in curriculum development, teaching, evaluating, and advising. Assist faculty to understand the total program requirementsincluding related course content.
• Facilitate opportunities for faculty to maintain clinical expertise in areas of specialization.
• Facilitate opportunities for faculty to participate in professional and community activities.
• Develop research and scholarship activities in concert with faculty and students.
• Facilitate faculty in the development of research projects and other scholarly activities.
• Provide for evaluation of faculty members.
• Manage track and coordinate academic counseling related to progression requirements.

Professional development for self:

• Avail self of opportunities to improve and update knowledge of nursing, curriculum, and administration in nursing education.
• Maintain knowledge of activities and issues of the Nursing profession at large, especially as these relate to nursing education.
• Participate in professional and community activities

 

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE: 

• Holds an earned Doctorate degree in nursing or other related discipline.
• Has five or more years’ clinical experience in nursing.
• Provides proof of unencumbered licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Iowa or licensed in another state and recognized for licensure in Iowa, pursuant to the nurse licensure compact contained in Iowa code section 152E.1.
• Has five years' experience teaching in baccalaureate or higher degree nursing education programs.
