BCU Celebrates Catholic Schools Week with a Special Connection

January 27, 2025

Briar Cliff University is proud to join Catholic schools nationwide in celebrating Catholic Schools Week 2025, an annual observance recognizing the profound impact of faith-based education. From January 26 to February 1, the university reflects on the values, community, and academic excellence fostered through Catholic education.

As part of the celebration, Briar Cliff hosted a free admission night at this past Saturday’s basketball game for Catholic school students who wore their school attire. That night, a special moment captured the heart of the Catholic education mission. Among the attendees was Paige Sikora, a second grader from Sacred Heart School in Spencer, Iowa, who participates in a unique pen pal program through Briar Cliff University. At the game, Paige had the opportunity to meet Kylie Sanger, her college pen pal, in person—an experience that highlights the mentorship and lasting connections that grow within Catholic education.

Briar Cliff students in various programs, including education and social work, connect with students for the pen pal program from Sacred Heart School in Spencer, Iowa and St. Mary’s Catholic School in Humboldt, Iowa.

"Moments like these show the strength of the Catholic school community at every level," said Theresa Engle, Education Department Chair at Briar Cliff University. "Catholic Schools Week is a time to reflect on the value of faith-based education, and this simple yet meaningful experience speaks volumes about the bonds it creates."

Briar Cliff Sunday: Supporting Student Scholarships

As part of the weeklong celebration, Briar Cliff Sunday will take place on February 1–2, inviting parishes across the Diocese of Sioux City to participate in a special collection benefiting student scholarships at Briar Cliff University. Last year, this initiative raised over $33,000 to help ensure that students continue to have access to a high-quality Catholic education.

Online giving opportunities for Briar Cliff Sunday are available at briarcliff.edu/donate.
