We celebrate first generation college students in November to commemorate the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965. Like the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts of the era, the HEA was intended to level the playing field and give students from under-represented backgrounds a real chance at a college education. Programs such as federal TRIO programs, student loans, and federal grants were created to ensure students whose parents hadn’t completed a post-secondary degree would be supported as they navigated the college system.
