Dr. Owens holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, where he studied piano with Dr. David Worth. He continued graduate studies and completed both his Master of Music and Doctorate of Musical Arts degrees in Piano Performance from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he studied with Dr. Noel Engebretson.
Dr. Owens teaches courses in music history and appreciation and as well as accompanies the Cliff Singers, Chamber Choir, and vocal students. Off campus he serves as the Organist/Pianist at Grace United Methodist Church, Principal Keyboardist for the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra, Accompanist for the Abu Bekr Shrine Chanter Unit, and maintains a busy schedule as a freelance accompanist, adjudicator for piano competitions, and master class teacher throughout the region. Originally from the North Dakota, Dr. Owens spent five years prior to his arrival at Briar Cliff on the faculty at Blue Mountain College in Blue Mountain, Mississippi, where he served as Assistant Professor of Music.
Dr. Owens has performed recitals throughout the United States and has recieved several honors, including twice winning the Alabama MTNA Collegiate Artist Competition and the Mississippi Humanities Teacher Award for Blue Mountain College.
