BCU Director Earns Top Writing Honors, Presents at Workshop

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Paula Damon, director of marketing and communications at Briar Cliff University, received top writing awards in the 2013 South Dakota Press Women (SDPW) Communications Contest.
In the statewide competition, Damon earned first place in the General category for two short non-fiction works, titled “Untold stories rooted in gestures” and “End times? Not so fast.”
In the SDPW contest, Damon also received three second-place honors for her writing in the Informational, Personal Opinion and Humor categories. Previously, her writing has garnered numerous awards in national and state press women competitions.
In May, Damon was invited to be a guest faculty member for “Story Catcher Summer Writing Workshop and Festival” at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center in Chadron, Neb. Her workshops covered journaling, blogging, establishing writing time and creating a writing environment. The event was sponsored by the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Society and Chadron State College.
In addition to her responsibilities at BCU, Damon is a columnist for the Vermillion (S.D.) Plain Talk and the Carroll (Iowa) Daily Times Herald. She holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communication from the School of Contemporary Media and Journalism at the University of South Dakota (USD), Vermillion, and a master’s degree in English literature from USD.
