BCU Receives $130K Grant for Molecular Biology Teaching Lab
SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust has awarded Briar Cliff University a $130,000 grant to develop a state-of-the-art molecular biology teaching laboratory.
“We want Briar Cliff biology, biochemistry and molecular biology majors to have a strong applied science background,” said Dr. Ted Wilson, associate professor of biology and chair of the division of natural and mathematical sciences at BCU. “With this grant, BCU’s new molecular biology teaching lab will provide an incredible background with the latest equipment and tools for students and faculty to address current scientific questions and problems,” explained Dr. Wilson, who also is the director of the planned Center for Health Care Initiatives at Briar Cliff.
“With the new lab, Briar Cliff biology majors will acquire relevant biomedical research skills, preparing them for medical school and a variety of careers in health care,” said Dr. Kelly Eder, assistant professor of biology at BCU. “As an additional benefit, my own research in the lab will focus on how infection affects maternal and fetal health by pursuing research projects that could lead to improved pregnancy outcomes,” said Dr. Eder, who prior to joining BCU was a research fellow at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
“As a part of BCU Vision 2020, the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust grant represents one of the building blocks in our ambitious plan to reimagine health science education,” said Beverly A. Wharton, president of Briar Cliff University.
In response to changing health care needs locally and nationally, BCU’s Vision 2020 calls for a Center for Health Care Initiatives, among other objectives, which will involve partnering with area health care providers to develop programs for improving access to health care education and health care services to underserved communities.
