The Black Hills Experience is a multidisciplinary 3-credit course offered in May during the week after graduation.

Students embark on a trip that may include stops at Badlands National Park, Wounded Knee, Wind Cave National Park, Hot Springs Mammoth Site, Custer State Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Harney Peak, and Devils Tower.

Previously, students have analyzed the region's water chemistry, identified local animals and plants, and encountered the region's geology.

Another highlight of the trip is a lecture by a local experts. Speakers in the past have included authors Dan O'Brien and Linda Hasselstrom, cave explorer Jan Conn, and most recently Jim Jandreaux, the manager of Bear Butte State Park.

This course can be taken as an elective, or it may fulfill a general education requirement. Opportunities for 1-credit sections are possible in Biology and Chemistry.
